Bailey Sweeny emerged as the surprise package on Friday morning at Mount Panorama, securing a brilliant maiden pole position for the opening race of the Dunlop Super2 Series at the Bathurst 1000. The young charger provisionally qualified third before setting the pace in a high-stakes Top 5 Shootout, edging out his rivals in style.
Sweeny managed to outpace Nash Morris of Tickford Autosport during the dramatic shootout. Notably, Sweeny was the sole driver in the top-five pole showdown to opt for the first set of tyres from qualifying, differing from the rest of the field who utilized the same second set they finished the preceding session with.

This bold tactical choice paid massive dividends on the iconic mountain circuit. "Awesome place to do it, especially in a Top 5 Shootout. I could actually watch how the session was going to play out," Sweeny said regarding his stellar run to the front of the grid.
Reflecting on his clear track and impressive pace, he added, "Having the Mountain to myself was pretty special. I was pretty happy with my lap in quali and I was pretty close on the used tyre. Absolutely rapt with my lap. I put it all on the line out there."
Further down the order, Lochie Dalton of Blanchard Racing Team slipped from provisional pole to third, while Ben Gomersall dropped from second to fourth. Meanwhile, Brad Vaughan led the Holden Commodore contingent for Brad Jones Racing by qualifying in fifth place ahead of the afternoon race.
