The opening day of the Indonesian Grand Prix at the Mandalika Circuit brought a mix of relief and technical headaches for Francesco Bagnaia, despite the Italian rider successfully securing a direct passage into Q2 after finishing tenth in the pre-qualification practice. Amid encouraging signs from setup changes carried over from Motegi, the factory rider had to cope with mysterious handling setbacks that prevented him from fully exploiting the potential of his Ducati machine.
Throughout Friday's sessions, Bagnaia suffered two sudden front-end closures in separate practices. When asked by collaborator Manuel Pecino about the root cause of these incidents, the reigning world champion admitted they were linked to a specific issue that he was not at liberty to disclose, while assuring reporters that things would be in order by Saturday. The demanding Friday also forced him to switch between different bikes during the runs due to a minor setback.
On a more positive note, the modifications introduced during the Japanese GP and kept for Mandalika have begun delivering tangible benefits. Bagnaia noted that the adjustments are helping him control the motorcycle much better, particularly during braking phases and corner entries, allowing him to brake harder and string together consecutive laps to build much-needed rhythm and confidence.

Despite this evolutionary step, the lack of rear grip continues to hamper his performance, especially in sections requiring high mid-corner speed. This limitation has placed Ducati on the back foot compared to their rivals on the island circuit. Evaluating the competitive landscape, Bagnaia frankly conceded that beating the fierce Aprilia machines around Mandalika will prove to be a remarkably difficult task for the squad.
Securing a top-ten spot provides a crucial strategic advantage by avoiding the treacherous Q1 traffic, giving the Bologna factory mechanics ample time overnight to resolve the lingering setup gremlins and prepare the bikes for a high-stakes qualifying showdown.
