Ayrton Senna has once again made history away from the racetrack after one of his Formula 1 race helmets from the 1992 season sold for £500,000 at a memorabilia auction.

The iconic yellow helmet was used during the 1992 British, Hungarian, and Belgian Grands Prix. It was also the helmet Senna wore when he claimed victory at the Hungaroring.

The final sale price comfortably exceeded the pre-auction estimate of £80,000 to £120,000. The Shoei helmet has been authenticated as the one used in all three races and still shows extensive signs of race use, including stone chips.

Although Senna won the Hungarian Grand Prix, the race also marked the end of his reign as Formula 1 world champion. Nigel Mansell’s second-place finish was enough to secure the drivers’ title for the Williams driver.

Despite its impressive sale price, this is not the most expensive Senna helmet ever auctioned. The helmet he wore during the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix, when he ran across the circuit to assist Erik Comas after his accident, sold for £720,000 in April 2025.

During the same period, Senna retired from the British Grand Prix before finishing second to Mansell in Germany. That race history further adds to the helmet’s historical significance.

The auction also featured several other Formula 1 memorabilia items, including signed pieces from Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc, although Senna’s helmet emerged as one of the standout lots.
