Audi endured a major setback during the Miami Grand Prix weekend, with Gabriel Bortoleto initially at risk of missing qualifying due to unresolved technical issues. The situation followed his disqualification from the sprint race for a breach of intake pressure regulations.
The infringement involved engine air intake pressure exceeding the FIA’s 4.8 bar limit. Despite attempts to correct the issue after the sprint, ensuring full compliance proved more complex than anticipated.
This raised the possibility of Bortoleto being unable to set a qualifying time, which would likely place him at the back of the grid. Under F1 regulations, drivers can still be permitted to start at the stewards’ discretion even without a lap time, provided minimum requirements are met.
From a technical perspective, the issue highlights the complexity of managing intake systems and pressure control in modern power units. Unexpected temperature variations can significantly affect performance parameters and, in this case, push them beyond regulatory limits.
The situation was compounded by issues on the other side of the garage, as Nico Hulkenberg failed to start the sprint due to a power unit failure, underlining broader reliability concerns within the team.
However, in a late development, Audi managed to resolve enough of the problem to send Bortoleto out on track for qualifying. This demonstrated a rapid technical response under tight time constraints.
Even so, the sequence of incidents underlines that Audi remains in a critical adaptation phase in Formula 1. Technical consistency and regulatory compliance will be essential as the team looks to stabilise performance heading into the main race and upcoming rounds of the 2026 season.
