Antonelli Struggles in Singapore After New W17 Upgrades

Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli faced a challenging qualifying session at the Marina Bay Circuit in Singapore, wrapping up the sprint shootout down in seventh place. The weekend serves as a crucial milestone for the Silver Arrows squad to thoroughly evaluate the latest technical updates brought to the track.

The Mercedes squad elected to run the upgraded version of the W17 chassis, which was previously tested in Malaysia. This strategic approach was implemented to gather direct comparative data, with the new aerodynamic package fitted to the Italian driver's car while the older specification was retained on the other side of the garage.

The performance delta became immediately evident once the competitive sessions concluded under the dazzling lights of the street circuit. George Russell secured an impressive second place on the grid, whereas the championship leader found himself adrift in seventh position, separated by a gap exceeding half a second.

This substantial deficit created an uphill battle for the engineering crew, especially given the weekend regulations that prevent switching back to the previous car specification once the track action has commenced. Reflecting on the ongoing issues, the young driver admitted to feeling immediate handling hurdles right from the opening practice session.

Reporting insights gathered from FormulaPassion, the Italian talent shared his perspective on the unpredictable nature of his machinery. “Already in FP1 I had difficulties. There is still a lot to understand about this package, the car is very unpredictable and it is really hard to put together a lap. I had arrived with high hopes, but I think it will be a difficult weekend,” he stated.

He further noted the steep challenge of bridging the performance gap around the tight confines of the circuit, confirming that adjustments to his driving style remain the primary focus for the upcoming sessions.
