Kimi Antonelli leaves Zandvoort with an even firmer grip on the Formula 1 championship lead. The Bologna-born driver now holds a 59-point advantage over the Hamilton-Russell duo, a margin that isn't yet safe with 11 rounds remaining but shows his consistency in maximizing the W17's potential. Yet, beneath the sweet numbers, a concern is beginning to emerge: Mercedes is no longer the performance benchmark on the grid.
Antonelli has won only one of the last six races, after a run of five consecutive victories. The signal that Mercedes is losing its technical supremacy is increasingly clear, especially with McLaren's consistent performance leap since Hungary. The driver's honest statement came in a press conference after finishing second at Zandvoort.
“We are definitely not the fastest car on the grid right now. Maybe we're second or third, at least in this race. McLaren has made a huge step forward, especially after introducing that big upgrade package post-Hungary,” said Antonelli, emphasizing that the technical reference in F1 2026 has indeed shifted.
The upgrade issue is a sensitive topic at Brackley. Toto Wolff has highlighted the budget cap constraints limiting the W17's development. However, Antonelli remains confident his team can adapt and react quickly to stay competitive at the front.
“I have full trust in the team. They are working extremely hard on the next package that is coming, and they just want to make sure it works well once installed. It will be a tough challenge, but we are ready to give our best and exploit every opportunity. Hopefully, it will be our turn to bring a package that gives us an edge again,” he added.
Antonelli's statement is certainly a serious concern for rivals. Both McLaren and Ferrari now know that Mercedes is in a crucial phase, where every technical decision will shape the title fight. With 11 races left, the competition is heating up.
Nevertheless, Antonelli's points lead remains a valuable asset. If Mercedes can quickly rediscover its best form, he might extend the gap. But if not, the chase from behind could become a real threat.
