The 2026 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix delivered a sobering reality check for McLaren following a disastrous intra-team collision between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Although both drivers ultimately salvaged a double-points finish in Sunday's main event, the entire weekend was heavily overshadowed by their wet-weather Sprint race crash on Saturday.
The boiling point materialized on the final lap of the Sprint when Norris launched an aggressive move down the inside at Turn 5. The two Papaya machines made heavy contact, sending Piastri into the barriers for a DNF while Norris limped home in eighth place, squandering a valuable haul of championship points for the Woking squad.
Reacting swiftly to the catastrophe, team principal Andrea Stella convened an immediate meeting to reset the garage's rules of engagement, making it explicitly clear that selfish driving will never be tolerated.

"As for what happened yesterday in the Sprint race, I said that it was an unacceptable incident, and I was very pleased that our drivers also took this view," Stella stated. He emphasized that whether at the factory, in the pitlane, or inside the cockpit, the team's interests must always take precedence over individual ambitions.
Beyond the garage politics, Stella openly conceded that the MCL40 currently lacks the raw aerodynamic performance to consistently challenge rival front-runners for race victories, prompting intense development work behind the scenes.
