Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Andrea Stella has revealed that McLaren will begin the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Australian Grand Prix with a car largely unchanged from the specification used during pre-season testing in Bahrain.

The race at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne marks the competitive debut of the new generation of Formula 1 cars developed under sweeping technical regulation changes. Teams have been adapting to new aerodynamic concepts and revised power unit architecture following the winter testing programme.

After nearly two weeks analysing data from the Bahrain test, Stella explained that McLaren will introduce only limited modifications for the opening race weekend.

“The car we bring to Albert Park will largely be the same specification seen in Bahrain, with some minor aerodynamic refinements.”

According to the McLaren team principal, the development focus at this stage of the season is centred on improving efficiency rather than introducing major upgrades.

“We will continue working on important aspects such as weight reduction and optimisation of weight distribution, as well as unlocking further potential from the power unit.”

McLaren enters the 2026 campaign aiming to build on the momentum of its championship success last year, when the Woking-based team topped both the drivers’ and constructors’ standings.

Despite that achievement, McLaren has consistently played down expectations throughout the pre-season period, suggesting that several rival teams could hold a competitive advantage under the new regulations.

However, Stella admitted he is relishing the uncertainty that accompanies the beginning of a new Formula 1 season.

“This season is an exciting but complex challenge, and it’s great to be back racing again. That’s the reason why we are in this sport.”

Stella believes the opening race weekend in Melbourne will provide the first meaningful indication of where teams truly stand in the competitive order.

“We’re looking forward to finally putting the cards on the table in Melbourne and seeing where we truly stand as the first races unfold.”

He also acknowledged the collective effort within McLaren that enabled the team to prepare its new challenger, the MCL40, for the start of the season.

“Everybody at McLaren has played an important role in getting the MCL40 to the track.”

Stella concluded by emphasising that the real work for the team begins once the racing season officially starts.

“But the hard work starts now, and we embrace the task ahead.”

The Australian Grand Prix will therefore provide McLaren with its first opportunity to evaluate the true competitiveness of the MCL40 against its rivals as the 2026 Formula 1 season gets underway.
