The 2026 Formula 1 season delivered unexpected drama when the paddock was shaken by anomalous results at the relocated Bahrain Grand Prix in Sepang, Malaysia. Amid intense scrutiny over a sudden performance dip, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella firmly refused to panic over the challenging situation.
Reigning world champion Lando Norris struggled to match the extraordinary pace showcased by key rivals including Mercedes, Red Bull Racing, and a massive developmental leap from Ferrari. Stella acknowledged that his squad was caught off guard by the aggressive development steps taken by competing teams.
"We don't see any anomaly in our data, but we have to acknowledge that potentially some competitors have developed their car with bigger steps than we did," Andrea Stella explained during a post-race media debrief regarding the competitive landscape.

Furthermore, he pointed to Lewis Hamilton's impressive recovery drive with Ferrari as absolute proof of the Scuderia's sudden performance leap, noting that the red machine proved to be one of the strongest packages on track.
"And also here Ferrari, they were very very strong. I think you see that like Lewis Hamilton was out there with Lando Norris and from that position he managed to recover several positions overtaking cars through the race, meaning that he was definitely one of the best cars out there," he added.
Nevertheless, Andrea Stella believes that the extreme track surface and bizarre tire behavior in Sepang created highly misleading data, classifying the weekend as a complete outlier rather than a fundamental flaw in their car concept.
"It's a very special condition here, so I think we'll have to understand where are the behavior of the cars," cautioned Andrea Stella as the team looks ahead to the upcoming challenges.
Now, the focus shifts directly to the Marina Bay Street Circuit. According to Motorsport.com, McLaren expects the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix to finally deliver accurate answers regarding the true 2026 pecking order as the championship battle intensifies.
