Alpine Tyre Strategy Backfires in Sepang Disaster

A challenging weekend unfolded for the Alpine squad as they failed to secure a single championship point during the race at the Sepang circuit. Young Argentine driver Franco Colapinto could only manage a 13th-place finish, while teammate Pierre Gasly slumped further down to an underwhelming 16th. This disappointing result extends the French outfit's painful slump as they battle to defend their fifth place in the Constructors' standings against fierce pressure from Racing Bulls.

Unpredictable weather played a pivotal role in the dramatic opening phase of the grand prix. Heavy downpours before the start forced race control to delay the proceedings. Amidst the tricky track conditions, Franco Colapinto opted to roll the dice by starting the race on slick tires. Unfortunately, that high-stakes gamble backfired spectacularly as the asphalt failed to dry out at the rate anticipated by the pit wall.

“It is a shame how the race ultimately unfolded,” explained Franco Colapinto after crossing the finish line. “Given my grid position and the uncertainty of the rain, I found myself in the ideal condition to take that kind of risk with the tires. Based on the starting conditions, I thought we could use it to our advantage and gain ground, but the track did not dry fast enough and we lost a lot of time out there.”

The rookie driver admitted that the slow evaporation rate caught several drivers off guard despite the warm air temperatures and abrasive track surface. “It surprised me, and other drivers too, that the track took so long to dry out. With the high air temperatures and rough asphalt surface, we expected conditions to evolve rapidly in our favor, but in the end, it did not happen. The track did not look very wet, but the asphalt was slick and offered very little grip,” he added.

Similar woes plagued Pierre Gasly, who nearly crashed out during the reconnaissance laps due to a spin while trying to generate tire temperature. The collective struggles underline the urgent need for Alpine to refine their strategic execution and technical readiness if they wish to achieve their targets before the season concludes.
