David Almansa snatched a sensational Moto3 pole position at Aragon with a last-gasp lap, denying Maximo Quiles a fairytale return. The KTM rider clocked 1:56.347, just 0.043s clear of Quiles, who had to settle for third.
The qualifying session at Aragon delivered drama until the very end. Quiles, returning from injury sustained at Silverstone, looked set to claim his first pole of the season. But Almansa used a slipstream on his final lap to break the track record and seal the top spot.
Between them, Marco Morelli impressed by taking second, just 33 milliseconds adrift of Almansa. The Italo-Argentine rider came close to a shock pole but had to concede to the flying Almansa.
Earlier, Brian Uriarte set the pace in Q1 to advance. Matteo Bertelle was the best Italian in fourth, ahead of Adrian Cruces and Uriarte. Crashes for David Gonzalez and Joel Esteban in Q2 left them further down the grid.
With such a tight front row, Sunday's race promises to be intense. Quiles, the championship leader, will aim to limit damage from third, while Almansa and Morelli are ready to fight.
