Alex Palou once again proved his mastery on the streets of Washington D.C., securing his seventh pole position of the season with a commanding performance that left rivals trailing by over half a second on the short, unforgiving circuit.
The knockout qualifying session on Saturday evening was tense, with drivers pushing to the limit on the narrow layout. In the Firestone Fast Six, each driver had just one flying lap to stake their claim for the top spot. Palou, known for his smooth yet aggressive style, danced between the walls with only inches to spare, yet appeared completely in control.
Alex Palou set a time that no one could match. Kyle Kirkwood was closest but locked up during his sole attempt, ruining his lap and settling for second. Scott McLaughlin looked strong throughout but lacked the pace for the front row, taking third.
Christian Rasmussen was the surprise of the session, advancing to the final round despite being more known for his oval prowess. He secured fourth, beating his previous best qualifying effort. Marcus Armstrong, starting fifth, had his lap compromised by a lock-up at Turn 1. David Malukas also hit trouble, locking his tires on cold rubber, touching the wall, and breaking his rear toe link, forcing him to sixth.
Outside the top six, Pato O'Ward was the highest-placed driver not to advance, taking seventh and leading the Arrow McLaren charge. Christian Lundgaard qualified ninth, with Dennis Hauger splitting the papaya cars in eighth, just 0.02s ahead. Felix Rosenqvist and Caio Collet rounded out the top ten and eleven.
The session also saw Rinus VeeKay hit the wall early in Q1, damaging his car and ending his day, resulting in a 10th-row start. With Palou in this form, tomorrow's race promises to be a test of strategy and nerve, but the reigning champion looks poised to extend his dominance.
