Jean Alesi, the French F1 legend, has weighed in on Lewis Hamilton's persistent team radio complaints during the Dutch Grand Prix. According to Alesi, the seven-time world champion’s behavior showed a lack of respect towards his own team, Ferrari.
In his regular post-race column for Corriere della Sera, Alesi described Hamilton’s complaints about pit strategy and the delayed order to pass Charles Leclerc at Zandvoort as inappropriate. “I found the radio complaints and post-race remarks out of place,” Alesi wrote. “Charles didn’t give way immediately, but I don’t think the missed podium was down to that.”
Hamilton finished fourth behind George Russell, having questioned the team’s decision not to pit him earlier during a safety car period. Alesi believes that a driver of Hamilton’s vast experience should better understand team dynamics.
“Lewis has a big personality, he is an asset, but he also commands a certain awe. I remind us all, and him too, that Ferrari is Ferrari. It deserves respect. Even when it doesn’t instantly comply with a request,” Alesi said.
After the race, Hamilton did apologize, admitting that his radio messages were “not the best version” of himself. He also stated he is proud to be part of Ferrari and optimistic about the team’s progress. That statement provided a warmer close to the drama in the Netherlands.
Attention now turns to Ferrari's home race at Monza this weekend, where the team will debut a new power unit with the ADUO-2 specification—a crucial step in their pursuit of the Constructors’ Championship. Alesi added, “Ferrari is Ferrari. Respect it.”
