Honda HRC test and development rider Aleix Espargaro has been officially confirmed to replace Joan Mir at the 2026 Indonesian MotoGP. The race weekend is scheduled to take place at the Mandalika International Circuit in Lombok from October 9 to 11, 2026. This certainty is reinforced by the inclusion of Espargaro's name and his iconic number 41 in the official entry list for the upcoming event.

The decision to appoint Espargaro comes as Mir is forced to sit out the race due to an ongoing failure to recover from serious health issues and acute energy depletion. Following direct advice from MotoGP Medical Director Dr. Angel Charte, Mir has been ordered to undergo strict total rest. The Spanish rider is also scheduled to undergo further medical examinations at the Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona, further extending his absence after previously missing the Japanese GP.

The Mandalika round will mark a significant milestone for Espargaro in his current role as a development rider for Honda HRC. This Indonesian outing will serve as his first competitive appearance of the 2026 season since his final regular appearance at the 2025 Valencia GP season finale.

Espargaro's presence in Mandalika comes despite considerable physical hurdles. He returns to action after suffering a severe injury during pre-season testing in Sepang that required surgery to remove a metal implant from his back. Although fully recovered, he has reportedly set very realistic expectations for the weekend.

This cautious approach is driven by his limited track time aboard the current-spec Honda RC213V and the notoriously demanding physical nature of the Mandalika circuit layout. The entire paddock will now watch closely to see how quickly the veteran Spaniard can adapt to the machine under the intense tropical conditions of Indonesia.
