Alberto Surra has emerged as one of the standout breakout stars of the 2026 WorldSBK season following another milestone performance at the Estoril circuit. The Italian rider successfully secured his maiden podium finish in a long-format race, proving his recent surge in competitive form is firmly here to stay.

Surra's remarkable run kicked off when he claimed a front-row grid start at Cremona weeks ago, quickly following it up with a breakthrough podium during the Sprint Superpole Race. That stellar momentum carried directly into the Estoril weekend where he consistently dominated the timing sheets, finishing second in both Friday practice sessions before slotting into third during FP3.

Although he narrowly missed out on a front-row start after being edged out by Alex Lowes in qualifying, Surra executed a flawless race strategy to claim the final step of the rostrum in Race 1. This incredible developmental leap coincides with his confirmed contract renewal to stay with the Motocorsa squad for the upcoming 2027 championship campaign.

"I’m really happy with my first podium in a long race," said Alberto Surra, speaking to WorldSBK.com after Race 1 at Estoril. "It’s even more emotional; it’s fantastic. I want to thank my team, they’re my second family. I have a great relationship with them."

The root of Surra's performance turnaround stems from crucial setup tweaks and electronic refinements implemented just ahead of the Cremona round. With improved mechanical feedback flowing from his machine, the young Italian is setting his sights firmly on future silverware.

"In this moment, I’ve been in a good mentality. Before Cremona, we improved the setup and something on the electronics. Now I have good feedback on the bike, and, step by step, I think another podium is possible. I don’t know if it will be at Estoril, but I know it’s possible," he elaborated regarding his progression.

Despite tasting success, Surra maintains a grounded perspective when evaluating the sheer pace of the leading factory machinery currently populating the grid. He acknowledges that established front-runners like Nicolo Bulega still hold an immense advantage as he navigates his learning curve as a series rookie.

"I don’t think a win is possible yet, but it’s still the dream. But I’m staying focused for my best results race-by-race. Nicolo [Bulega] and Iker [Lecuona] still have a really good package, and they are really fast riders. I’m a rookie, so I want to keep going step-by-step," he concluded.
