Albert Arenas has officially written his name in the history books by securing the 2026 World Supersport championship title. The Spanish rider sealed his second world crown following a nail-biting opening race on Saturday at the Estoril Circuit in Portugal, delivering a masterclass in championship management under immense pressure.
Riding for Yamaha, Arenas arrived in Portugal boasting a commanding 86-point advantage over his closest rival, France's Valentin Debise. The equation was clear for the championship leader: finish inside the top three or ensure his title challenger missed out on the top five to mathematically wrap up the crown at the very first opportunity of the weekend.
The lights went out and the Estoril opener immediately lived up to its high-stakes billing. Arenas slotted straight into the leading group, aware that every corner could dictate the outcome of his championship campaign. Up front, the battle for supremacy involved fierce contenders like Lucas Mahias, Tom Booth-Amos, and Oli Bayliss, all pushing hard to complicate the Spaniard's path to glory.
With ten laps remaining, the championship pendulum swung heavily in favor of the Spanish contender as he fought near the front while Debise languished down in eleventh place. However, the race script morphed into a thriller in the closing laps as the French challenger mounted a remarkable charge through the pack, eventually closing in while Arenas engaged in a fierce tussle for the podium.
Crossing the checkered flag in fourth place following a tense late-game scrap with Jeremy Alcoba, Arenas did not even need a podium finish to secure his ultimate goal. The points cushion built across the entire 2026 season ultimately guaranteed the title celebrations could begin right there in Estoril ahead of the season finale.
