Ai Ogura's MotoGP title hopes have suffered a major setback after he underwent surgery on his left hand following a training injury ahead of the Aragon Grand Prix. The Trackhouse Aprilia team confirmed the operation in Barcelona was successful, but no clear timeline for his return has been given.

The procedure, performed by Dr. Mir, involved plating a fracture in Ogura's left thumb. The team said an assessment will be made over the weekend to establish a rehabilitation plan. While they hope Ogura can be fit for the San Marino Grand Prix in 15 days, they admitted it is too early to confirm anything.

This injury comes at a crucial point in Ogura's season. He is currently third in the championship, 37 points behind leader Jorge Martin. His maiden MotoGP victory at the Dutch GP, plus three other grand prix podiums and three sprint podiums, have made him a serious title contender.

Ogura's consistency has been impressive, but he has also had two DNFs this season. His most recent was at the British GP, his first crash in a race in 2026. He also retired from the US GP while in podium contention due to a technical issue.

The injury also adds to the drama of his upcoming move to the factory Yamaha team in 2027, a shocking decision that will see him partner Jorge Martin. Meanwhile, Trackhouse has retained Raul Fernandez and signed Enea Bastianini for next year.

With Ogura out, Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori will replace him at Aragon. This is a critical test for both Ogura and his team as they fight to stay in the championship hunt.
