The Chevrolet Camaro #15 from Team 18 suffered a serious electrical issue during a test session at The Bend in South Australia. Super2 racer Bayley Hall could only complete an estimated 20 uninterrupted flying laps as the team hunted down the source of the problem.
Craig Lowndes, who was on hand as Enduro Cup co-driver, was scheduled to complete 10 laps but didn't drive due to the disrupted schedule. Team boss Adrian Burgess explained the car experienced a total power loss, causing the dash and steering wheel functions to fail, and even the wipers to turn on by themselves. "We changed absolutely everything else and then we had to throw the 'Hail Mary' at it and put another chassis harness in there," he said.
The issue arose after the car had been used for wind tunnel duties and an aero test at Queensland Raceway in May without any problems. Burgess is curious about the cause and plans to inspect the old harness next week. Despite the setback, he's relieved the problem surfaced during testing rather than at a race.
The interruptions meant the team couldn't practice pit stops or complete planned setup changes. However, Burgess remains optimistic about Hall's performance, noting he was only a tenth off more established runners on fresh tires. "He's still done a very good job for us," Burgess praised.
The wildcard program is a continuation of Triple Eight's switch to Ford, with Team 18 taking over the Supercheap Auto entry. The car will get another test outing in a full-field session at Queensland Raceway after Ipswich. With preparations slightly undercooked, the team hopes to be solid for the upcoming Enduro Cup.
