Fabio Di Giannantonio has sent a clear message to Ducati and its rivals ahead of the Aragon GP: do not underestimate the threat from Aprilia. The VR46 rider believes Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin are in top form and ready to fight for the podium at a circuit long considered Ducati territory.
Di Giannantonio himself had a solid start to the weekend, finishing fourth in combined practice, just a fraction behind the pace-setter. But his Friday was not as smooth as it looked. The Italian admitted struggling to find rhythm early on, even crashing in the morning session, which briefly shook his confidence.
“It was a tougher day than expected. As soon as I hit the track, the feeling wasn't good at all and I crashed. Even with the second bike, it took time to get back the old sensations,” he told Sky Sport MotoGP. However, he managed to bounce back and rediscover his best form. “In the end it turned out well because we returned to the same package as at Silverstone: the bike worked really well and the feeling came back immediately.”
Di Giannantonio then shared his view on the pecking order at Aragon. He acknowledged that Bezzecchi had a superb day, especially with the medium tyre, which made him extremely fast. “Bezzecchi clearly had a great day. With the medium tyre he was flying and finished with an excellent lap. Martin will also be there, he's fast and the team works well.”
Still, he expects the Marquez brothers to be at the front. “I expected the two Marquez brothers to be at the top, so so far everything is as normal. But I would absolutely not count out Aprilia,” he insisted. This statement is notable because Aragon has traditionally been a Ducati-friendly track, yet the ever-improving RS-GP makes the fight much closer.
Technically, Aprilia has often excelled on tracks with long corners like Aragon. With Bezzecchi growing more comfortable on the Italian machine and Martin's experience unquestionable, the potential for an upset is real. For Ducati, this serves as an early warning that their dominance is no longer absolute, especially if their riders drop their guard.
