A surprising twist has emerged from the Moto3 paddock. David Munoz will part ways with Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP earlier than planned. The Spanish rider, still sidelined with injury, is set to join Gresini Racing for a Moto2 campaign in 2027, where he will partner Alonso Lopez, who has already been confirmed for the season.
The decision comes as a shock, given that Munoz signed a three-year deal with Intact GP at the end of 2025. The original plan was for him to spend one more year in Moto3 in 2026 before stepping up to Moto2 within the German squad. However, injuries have changed the course. Munoz has undergone multiple surgeries this season and is still not fit enough to resume racing.
A disagreement with Intact GP's management proved to be the turning point. The team proposed Munoz remain in Moto3 for another season in 2027, with a promotion to Moto2 following in 2028. This suggestion came as Intact GP aimed to keep David Almansa, who was slated for a Moto2 ride in 2027, and would otherwise accept an offer from Gresini.
Intact GP hoped this arrangement would secure both Spanish talents, but Munoz was not on board. He insisted on moving to Moto2 in 2027, a path Intact GP could no longer offer. With Almansa's promotion finalised and Manuel Gonzalez opting to stay after failing to secure a MotoGP seat, Munoz asked for an early termination of his contract, which the team granted.
Consequently, it is Munoz, not Almansa, who will head to Gresini. The Spaniard finally gets the Moto2 opportunity he craved, joining the Italian outfit for 2027. It marks a surprising redemption arc for Munoz, who has battled through injuries this season.
This move highlights the fluid nature of the rider market. Intact GP, aiming to retain two talents, loses one, while Gresini secures a promising name despite initially targeting Almansa. The 2027 season will be a fresh chapter for Munoz, and fans are eager to see how he adapts to the intermediate class.
