The NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway, nicknamed 'Too Tough To Tame', ended dramatically and reshaped the championship picture. Denny Hamlin, who arrived as the points leader, underperformed after contact with Michael McDowell of Spire Motorsports. The incident damaged the toe links on his #11 car, forcing him to settle for an 18th-place finish.
Earlier, Hamlin looked strong, finishing third in Stage 1 and Stage 2. However, the damage sustained early in the race cost him any chance to fight for the win. Meanwhile, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Christopher Bell, became the star of the weekend.
Bell delivered a stellar performance, finishing fourth in Stage 1, winning Stage 2, and most importantly, taking the race victory. This result earned him 73 points out of a maximum 76. Coming into Darlington, Bell was sixth in the standings, 50 points behind Hamlin. After the race, that deficit shrank to just 12 points, vaulting him to second place. Ryan Blaney, who was second, slipped to third, now 16 points adrift.
Hamlin praised Bell's performance. "We all knew that 'C Bell' has enough speed to win races this year, but their team got it done when it mattered most at Darlington," Hamlin said on the Actions Detrimental podcast. "That takes him from 50 points back to 12 – that's a big chunk, and that team feels like they don't have any weaknesses in the Chase. They'll be contenders, and this is a great start for them."
This was Bell's first win of the season, having been runner-up seven times. Bell admitted that the winless streak made him appreciate the victory more. "It was probably that winless streak I was on that makes me appreciate this more and soak it in more," Bell said. "You never know when your next win is going to come or if this is your last one. That was too long to go without winning, especially with the Toyota race cars. They're absolutely incredible."
Bell has never won the NASCAR Cup Series, with his best points finish being third in 2022. Despite that, he remains optimistic. "We're off to a great start, but no off weeks," Bell stated. "Right back to work next week at Gateway, and I still believe that I will have to win more races in the Chase if I want to be the champion."
With this result, the championship battle is tighter than ever. Hamlin still leads with 2135 points, followed by Bell with 2123, and Blaney with 2119. The NASCAR Cup Series moves to Gateway on September 14 for the second Chase race.
