Internal tensions within Ferrari are reaching a boiling point ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix. The opening-lap collision at last weekend's Mexico City Grand Prix, which involved both drivers, has ignited a fierce debate regarding team hierarchy. 1996 F1 world champion Damon Hill has now publicly urged the Maranello-based squad to immediately designate Lewis Hamilton as their number one driver to quell the ongoing unrest.
The relationship between Hamilton and his teammate, Charles Leclerc, has hit a low point after Hamilton launched a scathing critique of Leclerc's "do or die" approach. The seven-time world champion insisted he will "not be silenced," claiming that Leclerc races him significantly harder than he does other rivals on the grid.
"Here is where I stand on the Lewis v Charles debate; make Lewis #1 Ferrari driver. Sort it out. Make it clear. Ends all debate. Lewis will deliver for Ferrari. If they back him 100%," Hill stated via social media.

Hamilton himself, speaking in the Interlagos paddock, offered a pointed observation regarding Leclerc's varying intensity against teammates. "I can see what you see. In Singapore, he was fully wheel-to-wheel, fully on the inside, had won the lead in Turn 1, and backed off. It is definitely different. If you look at the teammates, it's the same with Sebastian [Vettel], it's the same with Carlos [Sainz]," Hamilton remarked.
Addressing his heated radio messages during the Mexico race, Hamilton added, "I've always tried to be respectful. Naturally, it's not so easy having someone like me come into a team because I'm very outspoken and I push and push and push for so many changes. I'm here to win. To be able to win, you have to work with everyone around you."
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur is now under pressure to mediate between his two drivers through crunch talks in Brazil. This move is considered vital for team stability before the 2026 season heats up further and potentially compromises their constructors' championship aspirations.
