Internal tension at Ferrari has reached a new boiling point following a controversial incident at the Mexico City Grand Prix. Former F1 world champion Damon Hill has provided a straightforward solution for the Prancing Horse to resolve the ongoing feud between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc: establish a clear hierarchy by making Hamilton the team's undisputed number one driver.
The issue flared up again in Mexico City when Hamilton, starting from pole position, engaged in a fierce battle with Leclerc on the opening lap. A clash at Turn 4 forced both drivers off-track, with Leclerc taking the lead by cutting across the circuit. Although Leclerc was later handed a five-second penalty, the maneuver disrupted Hamilton's rhythm and allowed Max Verstappen to seize the victory.
Hamilton did not hide his frustration after the race. The seven-time world champion explicitly called for stricter internal rules to prevent such clashes from recurring, pointing to similar tensions witnessed at Monza and Zandvoort earlier this season. For him, team consistency is paramount to maintaining their championship aspirations for the remainder of the 2026 campaign.

Addressing the escalating situation, Hill insisted that Ferrari management must have the courage to make difficult decisions. Writing via social media, Hill stated: "Here is where I stand on the Lewis v Charles debate, and I made this point in my commentary on Sunday in Mexico; make Lewis #1 Ferrari driver. Sort it out. Make it clear. Ends all debate. Lewis will deliver for Ferrari. If they back him 100%."
Hill's suggestion highlights the desperate need for stability within the Ferrari camp. With Hamilton striving to make history and Leclerc known for his aggressive racing style, team management is under immense pressure to choose between allowing free competition or securing points for their title ambitions. Will Ferrari heed the advice of the 1996 world champion, or will they allow the tension in their garage to simmer until the final round?
