Coulthard Calls Antonelli a Phenomenon, Not Just Lucky

Kimi Antonelli is the talk of the Formula 1 paddock, and former F1 driver David Coulthard refuses to attribute his success to luck alone. The Mercedes driver, who currently leads the championship, has been labeled a "phenomenon" by the Scot.

Antonelli, in just his second F1 season, took the championship lead after back-to-back wins in China and Japan. He has already notched six grand prix victories this year, most recently securing his eighth win at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid. His performances have marked him as a serious title contender for 2026.

Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, Coulthard discussed Antonelli's meteoric rise. He acknowledged that the Italian's win in Madrid was aided by a timely virtual safety car, but insisted that luck alone doesn't explain his success. "Some people say you make your own luck. He has found a sweet spot in his second year with this set of regulations," Coulthard said.

The former Red Bull driver also praised Mercedes for providing a competitive car. "Mercedes are serial winners, and he continues to take risks but somehow has the spatial awareness not to lose an end plate or rip a corner off when he touches the wall at Turn 7. The results don't lie," he added.

Coulthard emphasized that in a data-driven world, Antonelli consistently stops the clock quicker than most and sees the chequered flag. "Yeah, call him lucky. I call him a phenomenon. And unless he gets very unlucky, he is going to be the 2026 Formula 1 world champion," he stated.

Currently, Antonelli holds an 81-point advantage over his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who sits second in the standings. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton follows in third, 101 points behind Antonelli. With such a commanding lead, Antonelli is in a strong position to secure his first world title.

The 15th round of the season, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, will take place from 24-26 September. The challenging Baku City Circuit will be the next test for Antonelli as he looks to maintain his dominance. If he continues his impressive form, his first championship may be just a matter of time.
