The path for Colton Herta to secure his mandatory Formula 1 racing credentials has hit an unexpected roadblock following a mathematical error made by Cadillac regarding his accumulation points. Taking part in the opening practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez was meant to be the decisive step for the American driver to reach the required threshold.
Rookie drivers participating in official practice sessions are awarded a solitary superlicence point upon completing 100 kilometers of running. Herta successfully completed 30 laps around the circuit, comfortably surpassing the 24-lap requirement needed to claim the additional point toward his milestone.
However, it was later established that an error on the IndyCar website incorrectly listed his previous championship finish as sixth instead of his actual seventh-place result. This discrepancy meant he earned two fewer points than originally anticipated by management and the team.

The governing body confirmed that Herta remains on 39 points, falling just short of the 40 required to race in Formula 1. This highlighted that Cadillac's calculations were flawed when previously approached, as the squad maintained he was only a single point away heading into the race weekend.
His overall tally consists of points gathered from previous campaigns, including his strong runner-up finish in the American championship, alongside the four points secured through FP1 outings with Cadillac at various circuits throughout the ongoing calendar.
Despite the setback, multiple opportunities remain on the horizon for Herta to secure the necessary points before the season concludes. His name continues to circulate heavily within the paddock regarding future seat availability for upcoming campaigns.
