Christian Lundgaard has signed a multi-year deal with Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) to drive the #9 entry starting in 2027, taking over the seat that Scott Dixon piloted for 25 years. The announcement confirms a swap between the two drivers, with Dixon moving to Arrow McLaren.
The Danish driver enjoyed his best season to date in 2026 with Arrow McLaren, securing two wins and seven podiums, and finishing third in the overall points standings. His consistent improvement over five years in the series made him the ideal candidate to fill the void left by Dixon, a cornerstone of the team.
Team owner Chip Ganassi expressed his confidence in Lundgaard. "We are excited to welcome Christian to Chip Ganassi Racing," he said. "We know he's capable of accomplishing even more in the NTT IndyCar Series, and we're looking forward to helping him reach that next level with the No. 9 team. He's already proven he can win races, and it isn't often a driver of his caliber becomes available. Throughout our history, one of the things we've done best is identify young talent, help them maximize their potential, and develop them into championship contenders. We believe Christian has all the talent to be the next driver to do that."
Lundgaard remained unfazed when Arrow McLaren announced earlier in the year that they would not retain him, and he delivered his strongest stretch of results while exploring options with other teams. Now he joins an organization that has won seven of the last nine championships and boasts one of the most stable programs in the series.
At CGR, Lundgaard will partner with five-time champion Alex Palou and Kyffin Simpson, forming a potentially powerhouse lineup. The blend of experience and speed that Lundgaard brings is expected to fill the gap left by Dixon, who has long been the backbone of the team.
The move also marks a new chapter for Lundgaard, who previously raced for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing before joining Arrow McLaren. With the stability and resources of CGR, he has a prime opportunity to contend for the championship.
The 2027 season will be a test for Lundgaard to prove he is worthy of the significant responsibility at a team that has long been a dominant force in IndyCar.
