Former Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner has firmly stated that the successes achieved by the team's brand-new power unit in the 2026 Formula 1 season stem directly from the strong foundation he built during his two decades leading the Milton Keynes-based outfit. Amid the promotional tour for his upcoming autobiography Drive, the English manager continues to peel back the curtain on his lengthy tenure, discussing his current relationship with his former employers, which appears surprisingly amicable despite the dramatic circumstances surrounding his departure.
Speaking to the British publication The Race, Horner revealed that he received calls from Red Bull's hierarchy following the victories secured by Max Verstappen in Malaysia and Singapore. Those triumphs marked the first two historic wins for Red Bull's proprietary power unit, a heavily backed project initiated by the 52-year-old manager during his active leadership.
The team is the one I put together and built myself, Horner pointed out regarding his ongoing connection to the squad. The shareholders, even after the recent victories in Singapore and Malaysia, thanked me independently of one another, referring precisely to this aspect. Oliver Mintzlaff, in particular, very kindly called me after the Singapore race to thank me for what I created and for the results they managed to achieve.
Even though his signature is no longer formally attached to the accolades collected throughout this 2026 campaign, Horner made no secret of claiming these milestones as his own. The fact that this engine, on its debut, was considered the most competitive in Formula 1 and won on its sixteenth attempt is something I consider one of my greatest achievements during my journey at Red Bull, the former team boss asserted.
Following the tensions that marked his final year and a half before his dismissal, the air seems completely cleared between Horner and the two factions of ownership, namely the Austrian and Thai sides. I have a good relationship with both shareholders, Yoovidhya and Mark Mateschitz; I really appreciated their comments and the messages they sent me. I met them both after leaving the team. It is water under the bridge now, concluded Horner.
