The opening practice session at the Circuit of the Americas delivered intense competitive action as Charles Leclerc set the early benchmark. The Monegasque driver topped the timesheet in the first practice session of the United States Grand Prix weekend using Ferrari's newly introduced upgrade package.
Leclerc showcased impressive pace on both medium and soft tyre compounds around the Austin layout. He finished 0.084 seconds clear of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who entered the weekend carrying momentum from successive victories in Malaysia and Singapore.
McLaren's Lando Norris slotted into third place, 0.245 seconds adrift of the benchmark time, closely followed by the Mercedes pairing of George Russell and championship contender Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The young Italian arrived at COTA with a mathematical chance to clinch his maiden world title.
On the other side of the Ferrari garage, Lewis Hamilton encountered a trickier opening session. Struggling to find a comfortable balance and suffering several moments running wide on the soft compound, the seven-time world champion concluded FP1 down in sixth position.
Further down the order, several teams utilized the morning running for vital aero evaluations. Both Williams and Cadillac focused heavily on data collection to assist with the development trajectories of their current machinery and upcoming chassis designs.
