The opening practice session of the 2026 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix delivered intense action at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. Charles Leclerc stamped his authority by setting the fastest lap time of the session.
The Ferrari driver clocked a lap time of 1m36.052s on the soft compound tires, edging out his rivals. The Scuderia debuted their latest and final aero upgrade package for 2026 at COTA, featuring revisions to the floor, bargeboard, sidepod, and diffuser.
Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen finished second, just 0.084s adrift of the pacesetter. The Dutch driver looked strong through the fast and flowing Esses, though a lap that would have put him on top was deleted due to track limits.

Meanwhile, McLaren's Lando Norris claimed third place despite battling minor balance issues and oversteer moments on the bumpy 5.5km circuit layout.
Teams will now look forward to subsequent practice sessions to fine-tune their setups ahead of qualifying and Sunday's main race at Austin.
