Charles Leclerc Reveals 2026 British GP Pressure

Charles Leclerc admitted he endured a mentally difficult spell before securing a major victory at the 2026 British Grand Prix, in a race that finished behind the safety car after Max Verstappen's crash.

The Ferrari driver led from the opening lap and appeared to control the early phase. However, the biggest threat came from Kimi Antonelli, who was on fresher tyres after making a later pit stop.

"With Kimi, it would have been close," Leclerc said.

"He was very fast when he was coming towards me. It would have been very difficult to keep that first place," Leclerc said.

Leclerc conceded his chances of holding on had looked slim before Antonelli's charge was halted by a Mercedes issue. That changed the pressure of the race significantly, before the safety car introduced another late risk.

"Then I heard he had a problem so I was like 'OK, now I have a big gap and it should be straightforward'," Leclerc said.

"Then with the Safety Car, some backmarkers had to pass us, so I did all the Safety Car time at 100kph, so my tyres were very cold," Leclerc said.

Race control briefly appeared to open the possibility of a restart, but that decision was ultimately reversed. Leclerc admitted the outcome was not ideal for spectators at the circuit, but from his position as race leader, avoiding a restart was decisive.

"Not great for the fans around the track but in the helmet I was happy that there was not a restart to keep that win," Leclerc said.

Before the Silverstone win, Leclerc had endured a difficult spell after Monaco, including qualifying mistakes and race issues. He also described Barcelona as a weekend where the feeling was better, but another crash added to the mental strain, while Austria did not fully deliver.

"After Monaco, the feeling wasn't there. I crashed in Q3, then in the race we had an issue and that ended our race," Leclerc said.

"In Barcelona, the feeling was good but I crashed again. It was very difficult mentally," Leclerc said.

"Austria wasn't so great but here I we managed to put everything together and I hope I can keep that momentum going forward," Leclerc said.

The British GP victory was a significant response from Leclerc after that difficult run. With Ferrari back on the top step and the championship picture tightening, the next focus is whether Leclerc can turn Silverstone into sustained momentum across the next phase of the season.
