Charles Leclerc Makes Honest Ferrari Admission After COTA F1 Defeat
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Could Charles Leclerc have challenged for victory in Austin?

Charles Leclerc has made a robust and honest admission regarding his team's performance following a failed bid for victory at the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. After topping the opening practice sessions in Austin, Ferrari and the Monegasque driver held lofty ambitions for a dominant weekend.

However, that momentum evaporated during a tricky qualifying session. The pace of the SF-26 mysteriously vanished in Q3, forcing him to start the race from a disappointing fourth position and leaving him facing a steep uphill battle to fight for the race win.

The car's true race pace proved to be considerably stronger, supported by sharp strategic decisions and searing pace on the hard compound tyres during the final stint. This sparked widespread speculation that a victory might have been entirely possible had he secured a better grid slot.

Speaking to media including Motorsport Week after the chequered flag, Leclerc conceded that race winner Kimi Antonelli simply proved too fast to catch, despite his own lightning-quick final stint charge.

"I mean, the Hard, as Kimi said, was just a really good tyre, and I could push on it quite a lot," Leclerc explained. "So, yeah, I was more interested in trying tog I kept asking my engineer what the pace of Kimi was, but I was probably a bit too optimistic."

"I still wanted to give it a shot, but, yeah, I probably lost a bit too much time with Max and Lando. Even with free air, I don’t think I would have got to Kimi. He was just too quick today," he added, discussing his battles involving Max Verstappen.

When asked if this represented a missed opportunity, Leclerc pointed straight to his Q3 pace drop-off as the primary culprit. The Ferrari star went as far as describing the Maranello outfit as not robust enough across the duration of the event.

"I mean, if you look at FP1, FP2 and FP3, we were very strong. If you look at qualifying, at the end of the day in Q3, it was extremely difficult to bring the tyres up to temperature, and we probably lost a shot at the victory there," he stated. "But today Kimi was very strong, so, yeah, as a whole weekend, I think we’re just not robust enough."

While the Scuderia will undoubtedly take solace from the evident step forward displayed in Austin, the recurring tyre warm-up woes in qualifying proved to be a costly hindrance, leaving visible disappointment etched on Leclerc's face during the post-race ceremonies.
