Qualifying at the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo turned into a genuine test of patience for everyone in the paddock this weekend. Heavy downpours forced Formula 1 participants to endure a prolonged break lasting nearly an hour and a half while waiting for track conditions to improve. Once the torrential rain eased and standing water subsided, the grid finally headed out on extreme wet tires to begin their battle against the clock.

As Q2 drew to a close, the drying asphalt created a crucial transition window that allowed teams to switch over to intermediate tires. Timing this strategy call to absolute perfection was vital for securing a coveted spot in Q3, especially with weather conditions threatening to deteriorate rapidly once more. Navigating through the treacherous spray with remarkable composure, Charles Leclerc fought his way into the top ten shootout and ultimately posted the fourth-fastest lap time.

Despite showing impressive pace throughout the rain-soaked sessions, the Monegasque driver faces a steep uphill battle for the main race as he is forced to serve a grid drop penalty. The sanction comes after exceeding his permitted power unit allocation for the season by taking on a fresh engine. Nevertheless, the Scuderia Ferrari star insisted that the challenging qualifying session proved to be immensely beneficial for his engineering crew.

"It was very, very tricky, but at the same time I also feel like we learned an incredible amount," Leclerc explained after stepping out of the cockpit. "That might sound strange because you cannot change too many things on the car during qualifying, but there are still a few adjustments you can make. I was able to experiment a bit more than usual because we already knew we had to drop ten places on the grid."

Elaborating on the data gathered during the wet-weather running, the nine-time Grand Prix winner highlighted the wealth of knowledge acquired by the team. "It was very, very useful because I understood quite a lot, and I am pretty sure the team did too. This has been one of the most useful weekends in recent years because we were running on a wet track, and I felt the pace was good. Unfortunately, in Q3 we made a few setup changes that did not go in the right direction, but experiencing that firsthand was valuable in itself," he added.

Looking ahead to the Grand Prix lights-out, the experienced charger remains upbeat about his prospects of staging a recovery drive. "I feel good and I am really looking forward to the race. We knew from the very beginning that we had to take a power unit penalty, but we also know that anything is still possible here because the weather always plays tricks in Interlagos. The forecast for the race points toward tricky conditions again, and I hope that will give us the opportunity to fight for a podium finish," he concluded.
