Ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix weekend, tension in the paddock has escalated after George Russell claimed that Ferrari holds a distinct performance advantage. However, Charles Leclerc has firmly rejected this assessment, pointing out the fiercely competitive dynamics at the front of the grid.
The situation within the Mercedes camp highlights a stark contrast between teammates this season. While one side of the garage stands on the verge of clinching the World Championship during the 19th round, Russell continues to battle for the runner-up spot in the Drivers' Standings despite trailing by a significant points margin.
Speaking to the media including Motorsport Week ahead of the event at the high-altitude Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Russell highlighted a critical technical factor that could influence the competitive order across the entire grid.

“It’s going to be very interesting. I think turbo lag is going to be a big factor for a lot of teams this weekend,” Russell told the media.
The British driver explicitly singled out the Maranello outfit's power unit characteristics, suggesting it provides a unique operational benefit in the thin air of Mexico City. “There’s obviously no secret, the likes of Ferrari have a smaller turbo than most, so they probably have quite an advantage in this regard. We’re not sure as yet how challenging it will be, but can definitely foresee it being not straightforward.”
Despite Russell’s assertions, Leclerc completely dismissed the Prancing Horse being installed as the weekend's outright favorite, maintaining that the Silver Arrows remain the benchmark team at every circuit.
“It’s getting very close, and we have good momentum with Singapore and Austin,” the Monegasque driver explained, reflecting on the team's recent upward trajectory.
Leclerc emphasized that executing a flawless weekend and extracting every ounce of performance from the car's package will determine whether they can fight for victory. “We have maximised our potential and I was relatively happy with the pace we’ve shown. Whether we are the favourites this weekend, I don’t fully agree, I think Mercedes remain the favourites wherever we go.”
Reviewing the statistical landscape of the current campaign, the German constructor has secured 12 Grand Prix victories, whereas Ferrari has claimed two wins so far. Nevertheless, the Scuderia continues to refine its technical package.
“I think Red Bull are very strong recently,” Leclerc added, “but if we maximise everything we have, then I hope it can be a great weekend for us. And as we’ve seen, I think the optimisation of our package is what eventually will make most difference. It’s so difficult to put everything in the right window coming into qualifying that if we manage to do so, then I think we’ve got a chance here, but for that we’ve got to be perfect.”
