Charles Leclerc has detailed the significant damage sustained to his Ferrari SF-26 following a final-lap spin at the 2026 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, an incident that cost him a potential podium and triggered FIA investigations.
The Ferrari driver lost control at Turn 3 while chasing Oscar Piastri for third place. In an attempt to maximise energy deployment on the final lap, Leclerc pushed the car to its limit, but suffered rear instability that resulted in a spin and contact with the wall.
Technically, the incident was likely influenced by aggressive energy deployment combined with changing grip conditions under low fuel. With hybrid systems delivering dynamic torque, even minor throttle misjudgment can trigger sudden oversteer, particularly during corner exit phases.
The resulting damage impacted the car’s performance significantly, particularly the suspension and a probable puncture, leaving Leclerc unable to steer effectively to the right. This forced him to cut sections of the track while returning to the finish, forming the basis of two steward investigations regarding track limits and unsafe car operation.
“The damage was significant. I’m not exactly sure what it was, but there was probably a puncture and some suspension damage because I couldn’t really turn right anymore,” said Leclerc.
“It’s completely my fault. There’s no excuse. I pushed too hard into Turn 3. It worked before this season, but this time it didn’t, and it’s not acceptable.”
Leclerc had earlier adopted a tactical approach by allowing Piastri through to set up a counter-attack on the final lap. However, the plan ultimately failed due to the driver error that ended the battle prematurely.
Finishing sixth on the road and with investigations pending, Leclerc’s final classification remains uncertain. The incident highlights Ferrari’s sensitivity in energy management and rear-end stability, key areas to address ahead of the next round in the championship fight.
