Williams driver Carlos Sainz has openly expressed skepticism regarding the guarantees provided by motorsport authorities over the upcoming Formula 1 season finales in the Middle East. The unpredictable security climate in the region leads the Spaniard to believe it is premature to guarantee that the grands prix in Qatar and Abu Dhabi will proceed without disruption.
Addressing media representatives during Thursday's press sessions in Austin, Sainz challenged the earlier assurances delivered by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem that the championship would conclude exactly as scheduled. Speaking in his capacity as a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, Sainz emphasized the difficulty of maintaining absolute certainty.
“They seem very convinced that it’s going to go ahead,” Sainz remarked. “I think on my personal side, and not speaking as a GPDA, it’s very difficult to be convinced right now because there’s still plenty of things happening in the Middle East.” He also pointed to upcoming political developments that could potentially shift the global landscape prior to the Gulf leg.

Despite his initial reservations, the experienced racer acknowledged that drivers lack access to the comprehensive security assessments utilized by Formula 1 management and the FIA to evaluate event safety.
“The world can change a lot in the next month, month and a half, and we need to stay diligent and reactive to whatever happens, and not just go because we want to go right now,” he explained. Following intense media attention surrounding his remarks, Williams subsequently released a clarifying statement on behalf of the driver.
“Following some reporting of my comments in the press conference earlier today about ending the season in the Middle East, I want to be clear that I know the FIA and Formula 1 will put safety first and completely trust them to make the right decision,” the statement concluded.
