Carlos Sainz has officially extended his contract with Williams for the 2027 season, ending speculation over his future. The announcement came a day after Williams confirmed Alex Albon would stay, securing the team's driver lineup for next year.
Sainz joined Williams at the start of 2025 after losing his Ferrari seat to Lewis Hamilton. Despite interest from several teams, he chose the former championship-winning squad and made an immediate impact. His debut season at Grove yielded two grand prix podiums, including a third-place finish in Azerbaijan and another in Qatar, plus a Sprint podium in Austin. These results lifted Williams to fifth in the constructors' championship, their best since 2016.
However, momentum stalled in 2026. Sainz has scored just six points from the opening 11 rounds as Williams slipped towards the back of the field. The downturn raised questions about his future, especially after he indicated he wanted to assess the team's progress during the second half of the season. Audi was again linked with Sainz, but those prospects cooled after Gabriel Bortoleto confirmed he is contracted to Audi beyond 2027.

The new deal secures Sainz for more than his initial three seasons with Williams. In a statement, Sainz expressed his belief in the project. "I'm thrilled to announce my continued journey with the Atlassian Williams F1 Team family! I truly believe in the people that form this team, both at the factory and at the racetracks, and the investments and hard work that are happening in the background," he said.
With this certainty, James Vowles as team principal now has the stability he needs. Sainz's contribution is seen as extending beyond on-track performance; he has become an important part of Williams' push to return to the front. The combination of Sainz and Albon now boasts over 370 grand prix starts and 31 podium finishes, making them one of the most experienced pairings on the grid.
Vowles praised Sainz's dedication since joining. "From the moment he joined, Carlos' talent behind the steering wheel and dedication back at the factory have been extremely valuable for this project," he said. This decision also sends a positive signal for Williams as they continue their long-term rebuilding program.
