Carlos Sainz Doubtful Over 2026 F1 Middle East Rounds Amid Global Tensions

Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz has admitted that it is very difficult to be convinced right now that the season-ending races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi will definitely take place as scheduled. Despite FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem insisting that the events will proceed despite ongoing regional conflicts, the topic remains an uncomfortable reality for the grid.

During the official FIA press conference, an awkward silence fell when Sainz, Oscar Piastri, and Isack Hadjar were initially asked if they held any security concerns about traveling to the Middle East, with no immediate volunteers to answer the sensitive question.

Speaking in his capacity as a Grand Prix Drivers' Association director, Sainz noted that the fluid political landscape and upcoming events in the United States could drastically alter the situation within weeks. He stressed that it feels relatively premature to be entirely certain about the viability of the flyaway double-header.

"I think they seem very convinced that it's going to go ahead. On my personal side, it's very difficult to be convinced right now, because there are still things happening, plenty of things happening in the Middle East," Sainz stated during the media session, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the current geopolitical climate.

Despite his personal reservations, Sainz acknowledged that the drivers ultimately lack the deep political intelligence available to the governing body and commercial rights holders. Therefore, the grid must follow their lead and trust in official decision-making regarding safety protocols and logistical feasibility.

Fellow competitor Oscar Piastri echoed a sentiment of reliance on the authorities, noting that F1 has successfully navigated complex security situations in the past. Meanwhile, Isack Hadjar kept his stance straightforward, emphasizing that geopolitical matters remain completely outside his control as he focuses strictly on his driving duties.
