Young driver Carlberg has finally spoken out after a horrific crash in the Junior WRC. The incident occurred on Saturday during the penultimate special stage, forcing the stage to be red-flagged and both crew members to be airlifted to hospital.

Incident and Current Condition

Carlberg and co-driver Jørgen Eriksen suffered a massive crash that caused their Ford Fiesta Rally3 to roll seven or eight times. In a social media statement, Carlberg revealed that Eriksen suffered a concussion and briefly lost his memory. "Jørgen had a concussion and couldn't remember what happened. He is now slowly getting back his memory," he wrote. Meanwhile, Carlberg himself suffered air bubbles in his lung sacks due to the huge impact, but he was grateful that surgery was not needed and his condition is improving.

A Difficult Season

In his Instagram post, Carlberg reflected on a challenging season. "I am so sorry to everyone that believed in us this year. It's been the most difficult season of my career. I've made mistakes that I normally don't make," he said. Nevertheless, he emphasized that the most important thing is that they are both alive. "But in the end both me and Jørgen are alive and that's the most important thing."

Crash Sequence

Carlberg later confirmed to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that they had been discharged from hospital and were preparing to travel home. He also recalled the moment of the crash. "We were flat out in fifth gear. It was a left-hand corner. I'm not entirely sure what happened, but I lost the rear and went into a long slide that I couldn't recover from. Then I hit the edge of the ditch," he remembered. "I saw the sky and then the ground several times, and I thought this really could end in any way. It all happened so quickly."

This incident was a heavy blow for Carlberg, who had previously won the ninth special stage and was still in contention for a podium. He was also fighting for the Junior WRC title, which was ultimately won by Turkey's Ali Turkkan. Although the season ended bitterly, safety remains paramount.
