A bombshell revelation from Triple Eight last week has sent shockwaves through the Supercars paddock. The team discovered that Will Brown's car had been running an air restrictor one millimetre smaller than regulations allow. The finding has sparked intense debate and raised a crucial question: has this been the root cause of Brown's inconsistent form?
Interestingly, the issue was uncovered just before the Ipswich event, the very circuit where Brown secured his last Supercars victory twelve months ago. Back then, he was unstoppable in his Triple Eight Camaro. However, throughout the 2025 season, his performances have often been overshadowed by teammate Broc Feeney, particularly in qualifying.
Brown has made significant lifestyle changes during the off-season to improve his performance and reacted with shock to the restrictor revelation. Speaking on his Lucky Dogs Podcast, he claimed the issue has been costing him an average of 1.5 tenths of a second per lap this season. "I'm not at all saying that this is all of our problem. I just want to be on an even playing field to everyone else," he said.

Despite this, Brown acknowledged that the time loss isn't the sole reason for his underwhelming results. "One and a half tenths changes a lot of things throughout this season and makes us look a lot better, that's for sure. We'll head to Ipswich and try and put our best foot forward. We want to try to win races. It's not saying we're going to go win, but we're going to have a chance to win now," he added.
Currently, Brown sits seventh in the championship with two podiums and a single pole position. The restrictor discovery brings both hope and added pressure. Team boss Jamie Whincup revealed that investigating the issue has cost the team considerable resources. "Sport is an emotional game and these types of things have knock-on effects bigger than the average 1.5 tenths a lap," he stated.
However, the intense spotlight on this saga could backfire. Former Supercars driver and TV pundit James Courtney warned that if Brown doesn't burst out of the blocks at Ipswich, the pressure will mount. "I think he'll be faster, it'll help, but I don't think it's the silver bullet to bring him right to the front. Depending on how the first session goes, it's either going to give him more confidence or destroy him," Courtney said.
The big question remains: can Brown capitalise on this moment and break his 12-month win drought at Queensland Raceway this weekend? The answer promises to be a compelling story.
