Bulega: The Rookie Set to Shake Up MotoGP 2027?

Nicolo Bulega may be a newcomer to MotoGP in 2027, but he is already sending shockwaves through the paddock. The 26-year-old Italian, on the verge of clinching the Superbike title, is set to join Valentino Rossi's VR46 squad. What sets him apart from other rookies? Months of testing the Ducati 850 and Pirelli tyres, long before stars like Pecco Bagnaia, Jorge Martin, Pedro Acosta, and Fabio Quartararo even get a taste of the new machinery.

As a result, Bulega will enter 2027 as the most experienced rookie on the grid. He will even take part in the Sepang shakedown on January 29-30, an extra two days of testing granted only to rookies. This unusual advantage has sparked heated debate, especially during the Austrian GP weekend. Many riders acknowledge his potential, and some even tip him to challenge Marc Marquez and Pedro Acosta right away.

Pol Espargaro was the most outspoken: “He comes from a championship with a bike very similar to the next MotoGP and with the experience of all these tests, I think he will leave everyone open-mouthed. I think he can beat Marc Marquez and Pedro Acosta not because he's better, but because of the experience he has accumulated.”

Marquez himself admitted, “For me Bulega will be interesting. He's doing a lot of testing, he knows the bike, he knows the tyres, and I think he's a great rider.” Acosta echoed, “It will be interesting.” Meanwhile, Bagnaia told GpOne, “Ducati exploited the tester idea for next year very well and made a smart market move. We'll see how Nicolo adapts to MotoGP rhythms, but he definitely starts in a good position. However, I think by the first race we'll all be aligned.”

Bulega's arrival at Ducati and VR46 is more than just a signing. It's a long-term strategy: leveraging new regulations to create a rider who is battle-ready from the start. While rivals are still adapting to the 2027 bikes, Bulega already has invaluable data from thousands of testing kilometres. No wonder VR46 is being praised for the smartest move of the silly season.

But will this advantage last? Bagnaia may be right that by the first race everyone will be level again. Yet history shows that riders with early technical understanding often gain a psychological and strategic edge. Bulega is not just fast; he is also smart at reading the bike and tyres. That combination could be a secret weapon on tracks that demand rapid adaptation.

If Espargaro and Marquez are right, MotoGP 2027 could witness a stunning debut from Nicolo Bulega. A podium challenge, or even more, is not out of the question. One thing is certain: the paddock is on high alert. And for fans, this is a new drama not to be missed.
