Nicolo Bulega delivered a commanding performance in WorldSBK Race 1 at Magny-Cours, yet the Italian rider admits he hasn't reached his full potential and has his sights set on a perfect Sunday.
Bulega crossed the line with a comfortable margin over teammate Iker Lecuona in a race shortened to 12 laps after a red flag. The stoppage was triggered by Tommy Bridewell's crash into the wall at Turn 15, following a loss of the front at the previous corner.
Notably, the incident occurred at the same spot where Toprak Razgatlioglu crashed two years ago, prompting the installation of air fences on that barrier. Those air fences required repairs after Bridewell's crash, causing the Race 1 stoppage.
A Sweet Victory After a Long Break
This win is particularly satisfying for Bulega, who picked up right where he left off before the WorldSBK summer break, maintaining his impressive momentum.
“It's very nice to win after the long summer break,” Bulega told WorldSBK.com. “I was missing this feeling during the summer break, so it's fantastic.”
Despite the risks of a restart after the red flag, Bulega felt even more motivated. “I know Iker was strong, so I said to myself, 'Now is the time to put something more on the table and win this race',” he said.
Targeting 100 Percent on Sunday
Bulega had complained of a less-than-perfect feeling on Friday. Although his performance improved significantly in Race 1, he insists there is still room for improvement.
“We improved from yesterday, but yesterday I was at 80 per cent, today 90 per cent, and tomorrow I want to be at 100,” revealed the Ducati rider.
“I think we can improve a little bit the bike because I feel good but still not 100 per cent, so we have to work a little bit more. But anyway, I'm fast, so we just have to work on details,” Bulega added, now expected to be a serious threat in the Superpole Race and Race 2.
