Nicolo Bulega suffered a massive crash while testing Ducati's 850cc MotoGP machine at Mugello on Wednesday. The Italian was thrown from his bike at Arrabbiata 2 and was taken to hospital for further medical checks. Fortunately, no fractures were found, and he escaped with only bruising.
The incident occurred during the morning session of the second day of MotoGP testing at Mugello. Bulega was riding the Ducati Desmosedici 850, the prototype being developed for next season's regulations. A brutal highside sent him violently onto the asphalt. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for a series of medical examinations.
Thankfully, the checks revealed no serious injuries. Bulega sustained only contusions from the heavy impact. He was discharged and is now on his way home. However, this raises questions about his readiness for the upcoming test.
Ducati is aggressively developing the 850cc bike for the new MotoGP era. The Mugello test was crucial for gathering data, especially with Pirelli tyres set to replace Michelin next season. Bulega's presence in the session highlighted the team's trust in him as a potential test rider.
But this crash could disrupt Ducati's plans. The next test is scheduled at the Red Bull Ring in Austria on Monday, the day after the Austrian Grand Prix. Marc Marquez and Fermin Aldeguer are also set to ride for Ducati. Bulega's participation is now uncertain given his condition after the crash.
If Bulega misses the test, Ducati loses a valuable opportunity to evaluate the bike at a different track. The Red Bull Ring demands stability and engine power, key areas in the Desmosedici 850's development. An experienced rider like Bulega would be a huge asset.
Meanwhile, the MotoGP world is abuzz with David Alonso's future causing headaches at Honda for the 2027 line-up. Takaaki Nakagami will replace the ill Joan Mir at the Austrian GP, and Senna Agius will make his MotoGP debut with Tech3 Racing in 2027. Jorge Martin is also having his right arm examined, with surgery not ruled out.
