Brad Binder believes modern MotoGP bikes operate much closer to a “knife edge” than the machinery he rode during his rookie 2020 season, with increased downforce making the current prototypes far less forgiving once a rider exceeds the limit.
Binder has a direct reference point for that change after beginning his premier-class career in 2020. On only his third MotoGP start at Brno, the South African claimed victory and delivered KTM's maiden win in the premier class.
“I think back then it was really different, in the way that things were a lot more loose. There was a lot less downforce, and it was a lot easier to lift the rear of the bike,” Binder said when comparing the 2020 machinery with today's MotoGP prototypes.

According to Binder, that character allowed riders to attack more aggressively without immediately facing major consequences. “You could ride a lot more aggressively, and it was a lot more forgiving,” he explained.
The situation is different with the current generation of increasingly aero-dependent MotoGP machinery. “I think nowadays things are much more on a knife-edge. If you go over the limit it bites you quite quickly,” Binder said.
His assessment illustrates how aerodynamic development has changed the way riders manage the performance limit. Greater downforce can help control the motorcycle in certain phases, but Binder believes it has also narrowed the margin between extracting maximum performance and exceeding what the bike will tolerate.
The next major change arrives under the MotoGP 2027 technical regulations. Aerodynamics will be reduced, ride-height devices removed, engine capacity cut to 850cc and the championship will switch from Michelin to Pirelli tyres, creating another substantial change in bike behaviour.
Binder heads into the 2026 British MotoGP at Silverstone sitting 13th in the world championship. The weekend will provide another test of the current-generation machinery which, in his view, demands considerably greater precision than the bikes he first raced in the premier class six years ago.
