Brad Binder endured a frustrating Austrian MotoGP at the Red Bull Ring last weekend. The KTM rider had to manage a fuel-saving strategy that cost him positions, though he eventually finished sixth—his best result of the 2026 season.
Starting from 11th on the grid, Binder showed impressive pace. He set the third-fastest lap overall and was even quicker than teammate Pedro Acosta in two individual sectors. Best sector data revealed Binder was marginally faster in Sector 2 (25.973s) and Sector 4 (17.005s).
However, his hopes of a podium vanished mid-race. While running fifth, a fuel warning forced Binder to activate a fuel-saving mode he described as a "Moto2 map". The impact was immediate: he slowed dramatically, allowing Marc Marquez and Fermin Aldeguer to pass him with ease.
“I never had the speed to go with Ogura, and when I was riding alone I got the fuel warning, so I had to put the f**king ‘Moto2’ map, and then Marc and Aldeguer passed me like I was standing still,” Binder said.
Binder admitted it took several laps to adapt to the new rhythm. “You arrive so much slower at the next corner that you have to move all your brake markers, so it took a few laps to adjust,” he explained.
Once enough fuel was saved, Binder returned to full power and began to catch up. He finished 8.7 seconds behind Acosta, who took his maiden MotoGP victory. “Well done to my team, well done to Pedro on his first victory, he really really deserves it and I'm sure it's the first of many,” he added.
For Binder, this was his final home KTM event. Next season he will move to WorldSBK with BMW, while Acosta joins Ducati. The Austrian race was a bittersweet farewell for KTM in front of their home fans.
