Marco Bezzecchi dominated MotoGP qualifying for the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano, setting a new lap record of 1m29.982s to secure pole position. The Aprilia rider edged out his main rival, Marc Marquez, by 0.198 seconds.
Bezzecchi laid down the gauntlet early in Q2, becoming the first rider to dip into the 1m29s bracket at Misano, aided by a tow from teammate Jorge Martin. His pace was so strong that he didn't need to take risks on his second run, and despite the gap closing towards the end, no one could match his time.
Marc Marquez had to settle for second after a mistake early in his second run. The Ducati rider recovered to post the second-fastest lap, two tenths down. The surprise of the session came from Fermin Aldeguer, who took third for Gresini Ducati. The young Spaniard, on a year-old Ducati, navigated through Q1 and found an extra two tenths in Q2 to secure his second front-row start of the year.
Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46 Ducati) crashed late but still managed fourth, ahead of Jorge Martin, whose last-lap attempt went awry at the Tramonto corner. Luca Marini impressed for Honda in sixth, with Pedro Acosta leading the KTM charge in seventh. Franco Morbidelli, Di Giannantonio's teammate, ended up eighth and will serve a long-lap penalty on Sunday for impeding Enea Bastianini on Friday.
Two crashes in Q2 left Alex Marquez frustrated in ninth, but he still outpaced Raul Fernandez, Johann Zarco, and Pol Espargaro. Fabio Quartararo was the best Yamaha in 13th, lacking performance in sectors three and four, a quarter of a second adrift. He was followed by Bagnaia, who never looked like a threat for Q2, even before a poor second run in Q1.
With this result, Bezzecchi sends a strong message in the title fight. His dominance at Misano shows he can handle the pressure and maximize the Aprilia's potential. Meanwhile, Marquez and the rest must dig deep to challenge him in the race.
