Marco Bezzecchi has dismissed suggestions that the pressure of winning on home soil contributed to his costly crash in the MotoGP San Marino Grand Prix. The Aprilia rider started from pole position after setting a new lap record in qualifying, but his hopes were dashed at Turn 13 on the opening lap.
The incident not only denied him a home victory but also dealt a severe blow to his championship aspirations. Victory for Marc Marquez, with Jorge Martin fading to fifth, propelled the Ducati rider to the top of the standings, 33 points clear of Bezzecchi. This marked Bezzecchi's fifth Sunday non-score of the season and his fifth in the last seven rounds.
Speaking to the media afterwards, Bezzecchi was blunt when asked if he felt pressure to win at Misano. "No. When you start first you want to win. It doesn't matter if it's Misano," he said. He explained that he lost the front at Turn 13 after getting slightly out of shape through the fast right-handers, which pushed him off the ideal line. "For sure, when you have a full fuel tank, you have to manage the braking point a little bit better," he explained. "I had a bit of a shake in the fast part, so when I braked I didn't close the line perfectly and unfortunately I lost the front."
The crash comes just weeks after he suffered multiple injuries in a fall in Germany. However, Bezzecchi indicated that he hasn't aggravated anything in this incident. "Looks like it's OK, but the adrenaline is still going. So, tonight I will understand better, maybe tomorrow morning. But it was not a big crash," he said.
With a quick turnaround, Bezzecchi is glad that the Austrian Grand Prix is just days away, allowing him to reset. "It's tough, but at the end we can't go back in time. So, we will work hard. Fortunately, we have Austria very soon, so we will go home, we will try to reset, we will work in the gym and then we'll move to Spielberg," he concluded.
The DNF at Misano intensifies the championship battle, where consistency is key. Bezzecchi must bounce back immediately to keep pace with Marquez and Martin. The Red Bull Ring in Austria, with its heavy braking zones and high speeds, could be the perfect venue to return to winning ways.
