Bagnaia Frustrated in Motegi: The Real Issue Is Not Fitness But Pace

A gloomy weekend unfolded for Pecco Bagnaia at the Motegi circuit, a stark contrast to his stellar performance last season when he dominated both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Japan. Fast forward to the current 2026 season, and the Italian rider found himself struggling significantly, crossing the finish line in a distant eighth place during Sunday's main race, trailing the race winner by a massive margin of 20 seconds.

The weekend's woes began early, highlighted by a retirement in the Sprint race while riding outside of the points zone due to a tyre-related issue. Bagnaia admitted that his eighth-place finish in the Grand Prix was only salvaged because several rivals crashed out or were handed long-lap penalties during the chaotic encounter.

Speaking to Sky Italia, Bagnaia made no secret of his profound disappointment with the ongoing technical limitations. As reported by FormulaPassion, he highlighted the undeniable gap in raw pace compared to the frontrunners.

Tyre strategy also played a confusing role over the weekend, specifically regarding the hard compound tyre which most riders shied away from due to past experiences with low grip levels on similar specifications. However, the lack of confidence in braking stability and corner entry proved to be a far more critical bottleneck than rubber choices alone.

When questioned about whether his struggles stemmed from physical exhaustion or psychological pressure, Bagnaia cut straight to the chase with a blunt assessment.
