Ayrton Senna Championship F1 Cars Head to McLaren Sale

McLaren has shaken the motorsport world by putting five iconic Formula 1 race cars up for sale, offering collectors a rare chance to own a piece of grand prix history. The stunning collection spans 32 years of the team's storied heritage, reaching from the early nineties all the way to the modern 2023 racing season. These legendary machines are being sold individually through high-end dealer Tom Hartley Jr, who recently managed the high-profile sale of Bernie Ecclestone's historic collection.

The standout pieces of the entire collection are two Honda V12-powered MP4/6A chassis dating back to Ayrton Senna's final championship-winning campaign in 1991. Chassis 04 and Chassis 07 were both driven in competitive sessions by Gerhard Berger and tested extensively by Senna during that memorable season. Chassis 04 notably clinched a brilliant second-place finish at the San Marino Grand Prix, an event where the dominant McLaren entries successfully lapped the entire starting grid.

Moving further down the timeline, the offering also features the 2012 MP4/27A chassis 01, which served as a race winner for Jenson Button and was put through its paces by Lewis Hamilton. The car remains celebrated by engineers and fans alike for successfully avoiding the aesthetic compromise of the stepped platypus nose designs favored by many rival teams during that technical era.

The more contemporary machines included in the sale were both raced exclusively by Lando Norris. The 2021 MCL35M, which marked the British constructor's triumphant reunion with Mercedes power units, carried Norris to memorable podium finishes at Imola, Monaco, and Monza. Meanwhile, the 2023 MCL60 chassis delivered consecutive runner-up finishes in Singapore and Japan before later undergoing private testing sessions alongside Oscar Piastri.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown explained that leaving such mechanical masterpieces to sit indefinitely in storage would fail to honor their competitive legacy. "These cars were built to be driven and raced, and we want to see them being used and enjoyed," he stated. While exact figures remain undisclosed, industry reports suggest individual sale valuations ranging comfortably between five and ten million pounds.
