Speculation about who will open the 2027 Formula 1 season has finally been put to rest. The Australian Grand Prix has confirmed it will not step in as a replacement for Bahrain as the season-opener, despite ongoing uncertainty in the Middle East.

In the 2027 calendar released on Wednesday, Albert Park is pencilled in as Round 3 on April 1-4, after the season begins with a double-header in Bahrain (March 12-19) and Saudi Arabia (March 19-21). However, rising tensions from the Iran War have cast doubt on whether Sakhir and Jeddah can host their races as scheduled. Melbourne, which hosted the opening race from 1996 to 2019 and again in 2025 and 2026, was touted as a potential replacement.

But moving the race forward by three weeks to mid-March is not feasible for several reasons. First, from March 11-15, Australia will host England in a special one-off 150th anniversary Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), just a short walk from Albert Park. Second, the pit building at Albert Park has been demolished and is being rebuilt, with full operations only expected for 2028 and partial facilities available for 2027.

"Our date's been locked in now, April 1-4, and clearly we've got a big asset being built behind us that has some timelines attached to it," Australian GP Corporation CEO Travis Auld told Australian media. "So we're pretty much locked in at that April 1-4 date, and I think it would be difficult for us to move that date now."

The AGP's contract with F1 places them between race one and three each year. In the last two years, Melbourne has been the season-opener, and that has worked well. "We've had race one the last two years. I think what's worked really well for us has been a race early in the season. The story of the season is still taking shape," Auld added. "And so this year it will be race three."

This decision means Formula 1 must find other solutions if Bahrain and Saudi Arabia cannot host races. Options like moving a race to Shanghai in late March or reshuffling the calendar may be considered. However, one thing is clear: Melbourne will not shift its date.

For F1 fans in Australia, the confirmed April 1-4 date means they can plan their trips without worrying about sudden changes. Meanwhile, F1 teams must prepare for a potentially dynamic calendar, given the fast-changing geopolitical situation. One thing is certain: the 2027 season will be thrilling, with or without an opener at Albert Park.
