Audi has formally notified the FIA of its intention to appeal against the race stewards' decision not to penalise Yuki Tsunoda at the Italian Grand Prix. The move follows an incident during the lap-six restart, where Tsunoda was deemed to have triggered an extra formation lap due to his incorrect grid position.
At the time, Tsunoda, who was supposed to start from 14th, parked his car at an angle towards the inside wall. Race director Rui Marques was "not comfortable" with the position, prompting an additional formation lap. Under the 2026 F1 sporting regulations, specifically Article B5.9.4, any driver who causes an extra formation lap must enter the pit lane and restart from the pit lane exit.
However, the FIA stewards concluded that Tsunoda did not technically cause the extra formation lap, arguing that the race director acted out of an abundance of caution, and Tsunoda neither left his grid slot nor impeded other competitors. Furthermore, race control had not informed Racing Bulls that Tsunoda was at fault, leaving the team with no reason to instruct him to start from the pit lane.
The decision had a direct impact on Gabriel Bortoleto, who finished 11th, just behind Tsunoda, who scored a point. Audi, which fields Bortoleto, felt aggrieved at losing an opportunity for additional points. In an official statement, Audi confirmed it had raised a concern and notified its intention to appeal.
The appeal process is still in its early stages. Under Article 15.4 of the FIA's International Sporting Code, teams have one hour after a stewards' decision to signal an intention to appeal. However, this does not mean Audi has formally lodged an appeal; the team has an additional 96-hour window to study the case thoroughly before deciding on next steps.
For Audi, this case serves as a critical lesson in regulatory interpretation and communication between race control and teams. While no final decision has been made, the intention to appeal underscores Audi's determination to fight for its rights during its debut F1 season.
